MAJOR

Officer Force Structure: The officer force structure is comprised of three distinct and separate tiers. The tiers are Company Grade Officer (CGO) and include grades O-1 thru O-3, Field Grade Officer (FGO) comprising of grades O-4 thru O-6, and General Officer (GO), with grades O-7 thru O-10. FGOs are expected to have mastered CGO responsibilities. Officers should understand the enlisted structure, duty titles, and responsibilities within their organizations.

Major (Maj): Majs begin taking on larger roles at the Squadron, Wing, and Group levels. Majs often serve as a Squadron Commander, or as a staff officers at a Wing or Group Level. Maj is also a period in which many officers begin seeking out advanced career development or joint assignments.

Commanders: Special authorities and responsibilities are inherant with command. In addition to leading people to accomplish an assigned mission, commanders have the lawful authority and responsibility to promote and safeguard the morale, physical well-being, and general welfare of persons under their command. Commanders are responsible for executing the mission, leading people, managing resources, and improving the unit. AFI 1-2, Commander's Responsibilities.

Focus Areas: Professionalism and mission success along with developing tactical, operational, and strategic competencies associated with this rank and position. Competencies are developed through AF education, training, and professional experiences.
